AUCTION - AOR 3.2 - Woodstock - David Byrd - 1969 Poster - Wallkill, New York - Excellent

Here we have an offer for auction the original poster for Woodstock! Artist David Byrd was commissioned to do the poster for what was billed as "An Aquarian Exposition". Presented by the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which intended to use a site in Wallkill, New York. Everything was hunky-dory, it seems. David Byrd, (who did the Jimi Hendrix Fillmore East poster) produced a masterpiece here. The Age of Aquarius permeates the piece, with Cupid, thrown in for extra love. Truly sublime Water Carrier with a bit of a Maxfield Parrish feel, along with sumptuous border work. Unfortunately, the folks in Wallkill got cold feet, and the promoter had to scramble to find a new venue and also print new promotional material, i.e., the dove on the guitar poster. This original poster, however, was so obviously not done in haste, but rather with an immense amount of talent and love. This piece is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 257, plate 3.2. The poster measures 13 5/8" x 22 3/8" and is in Excellent condition, with toning, a light corner bend at the bottom right, some edge wear, and some light waviness. So much more accomplished and, frankly, Aquarian than that other poster. This image was produced by David Byrd before the location of the Woodstock event was changed, and the now-famous poster by Arnold Skolnick was designed. In many ways, it is a far more beautiful design, with its simplicity and lack of performers’ names.
Ultimately, the venue for Woodstock was changed to Max Yasgur’s farm in White Lake, New York, and this poster was lost to obscurity. Because it was never used to promote the event, it is quite scarce today.
